GIRLS GET BUSY’S BETH INTERVIEWS TAVI GEVINSON

Even though Rookie is technically for teenage girls, I find myself reading it religiously. It is so great and refreshing to have a website aimed at young people that tackles feminist issues without being too aggressive, and even giving sex advice such as using masturbation as stress-relief. Founded by fashion’s favourite fifteen year old, Tavi Gevinson, Rookie offers pretty much everything from DIY fashion tips to interviews with dreamy famous people. With monthly-themed content, Rookie is basically a Cool School that has a big team of bloggers/teachers that educates us all and even takes submissions from readers. I caught up with Tavi on Facebook chat to ask her about society, fashion and teenage girls.

BS: What made you start rookie?
…
TG: I felt as though there wasn’t a voice for or by teenage girls that was honest and feminist. I realized that my blog had given me the recognition and contacts I would need to start it, and got going. I’ve never stuck to or felt this passionate about a project. And of course, on a selfish level, I get a lot of creative satisfaction from seeing each feature come together.

BS: Do you feel that there’s a lot of pressure being a teenage girl these days?
…
TG: Completely. The internet brings more positive stuff than there was before like zine communities and feminist blogs, but it’s brought more negatively influential stuff too. The prevalence of porn, for example, is especially dangerous since American schools teach abstinence, so teenagers (and kids, scarily enough) look at very mainstream porn to figure out how sex works. So it’s stuff like that…and I guess it’s not just the internet, just the fact that there’s so much of everything nowadays, there are ads everywhere and everything is seen as a marketing opportunity…It’s hard to navigate. Hopefully Rookie can help.

BS: And do you think that there’s still a stigma with being smart at school? (i know there was at my school)
…
TG: I think it depends on the school. Or the class. In my non-honors classes you look lame for trying, in my honors classes you look lame for being lazy…

..
BS: As you get older, do you think rookie will still be aimed at teens?
…
TG: Yes. I hope more good stuff for teenagers to read and watch comes about in the next few years, and always, but I think this time of one’s life will always be the most interesting to me in terms of writing, aesthetics, etc. Even if I start writing more for other women my age, Rookie will stay for teenagers.
…
…
BS: What is your aim/goal with rookie?
…
TG: To give girls something to relate to, to know that they’re already cool as opposed to it being some thing where we TEACH the readers how to be cool…just general good vibes.
…
…
BS: Who are your favourite designers?
…
TG: Rodarte, Creatures of the Wind, Meadham Kirchhoff, Comme des Garcons, Prada.
