VIDEO: CRYSTAL FIGHTERS – YOU & I

As everyone gets hyped about the first rays of sunshine hitting the UK this year thoughts automatically turn to which tunes will soundtrack the small cluster of long summer days we’ll be blessed with. Splashh’s forthcoming debut and the new Daft Punk album already seem strong shouts for daytime/evening listening with their particular takes on sun kissed bliss and the new Crystal Fighters offering seems like it’s going to make its way onto many a playlist.

The video for lead single You & I mixes beauty and melancholy – with visuals reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox… always a good thing. Here’s what front man Sebastian Pringle has to say about the new track…

“You & I is a song that describes how time can fly by at warp speed, or slow down into a dream, when you are in love. All the craziness going on around you hardly matters, all that’s on your mind is you and your lover and that’s it. Everything can be happening at once, but nothing is important, not even time, when you’re together.”

VIDEO: IS TROPICAL – DANCING ANYMORE

Is Tropical’s video for new single Dancing Anymore lasted for about an hour on YouTube before the fun police rushed to shut it down.

Taken from their upcoming sophomore album I’m Leaving, the new track sees the boys teaming up with MEGAFORCE, the gallic brains behind their acclaimed video for The Greeks, to provide a veritable visual feast which is mos def NSFW.

Despite YouTube’s party pooping antics you can still check out the video via Vimeo below. The album drops on May 20th via Kitsuné.

VIDEO: SAVAGES – SHUT UP

There seems to be a bit of a theme running through Savages’ debut album. Titled Silence Yourself, the first track is Shut Up and, in conjunction with Dazed Digital, they’ve released a video of live footage to accompany this insistent album opener.

Beginning with a monologue from lead singer Jehnny Beth proclaiming that the world “has too many voices” and “the noise is a constant distraction”, she implores the listener to eschew easily obtained distractions and focus on themselves. Then comes the performance, and it’s everything we’ve come to expect from the girls. Savages have built their reputation and generated an enormous amount of excited hype by being first and foremost an amazing live act, and this video conveys the energy and expertise that goes into their performances – a juxtaposition of effortlessness and intensity.

Silence Yourself is out on 6th May via Matador Records/Pop Noire.

RIDE OR FRY: THE DANTE FRIED CHICKEN EXPERIENCE

Dante Gonzales aka Dante Fried Chicken is celebrating the launch of his new book Ride Or Fry: The Dante Fried Chicken Experience by hosting a whole heap of events in London over the next week and a half.

As well as detailing over 100 recipes for his signature dishes, the cookbook also explores Dante’s celebratory food philosophy and chronicles his life, recounting his journey from being a 13 year old runaway in South Central LA to being the proud owner an award winning pop-up food truck.

The book launch takes place tonight at Protein’s Hewett Street Gallery with an after party at The Horse & Groom – the event info can be found HERE.

DFC is also hooking up with Shay Ola from The Rebel Dining Society, taking up a guest residency spot at Death By Burrito next week. From Thursday until Saturday they’ll be serving a unique DFC/DBB mash-up menu and on the Sunday Dante will be flying solo and serving an all day brunch. All this takes place at Catch on Kingsland Road and you can check out further details HERE.

For those who take a keen interest in the street food phenomenon, Protein have rounded up a bunch of pioneers and trailblazers and will be hosting a forum for discussion on Tuesday… tickets are available HERE.

TUMBLR TUESDAY: UBICOUTURE

Over a year old, already one of the fashion industries go to visual tumblrs and yet still with a youthful freshness about it. Ubi Couture.

Christos Mouchas, 19 year old living in Greece started this blog after having taken a year off from university during which he felt inspired by Raf Simons’ last collection for Jil Sander. Particularly, its set with the boxed bouquets by florist Mark Colle which put him in mind of the paintings by Gustav Klimt. Scrolling through his collages; a lovely way to spend that hour which should be spent doing that spreadsheet or replying to those emails…

VIDEO: PRADA CANDY BY WES ANDERSON

Last week, Prada unveiled a sneak peek of their new Candy L’Eau video ad, featuring French actress/model Léa Seydoux and directed by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola. Now, the first episode in a series of three has been released. Running to just over a minute long, we don’t get a long way into the plot, but so far Candy’s date with an unnamed man has been unexpectedly interrupted by his best friend. The three then head to a 7:15 showing at the cinema where, we assume, Candy will begin judging which of the men she prefers… This is almost as bad as waiting for the next series of Breaking Bad to start.

LOOK BOOK: FRANK OCEAN

Everyone’s favourite urbz romantic Frank Ocean has become the latest star to step in front of the renowned Band of Outsiders Polaroid camera, appearing in the American label’s Spring/Summer 2013 lookbook. The images were shot by creative director and founder Scott Sternberg at the Los Angeles Times building earlier this month and were revealed through the brand’s Tumblr page. Ocean gets rather dapper, posing in a tuxedo in various locations around the Los Angeles Times building. A little while back Ocean had mentioned his interest in tapping into other facets of his creativity, however modelling wasn’t the first outlet that came to mind. Frank is no stranger toBand of Outsiders as it was this designer who was responsible for the banana yellow suit he donned for his Grammy performance of the channel Orange song “Forrest Gump.” Other celebrities to appear in previous look books include the decidedly un hip-hop actors Josh Brolin, Michelle Williams and Andrew Garfield, and artist Edward Rushca. The Band of Outsiders Spring/Summer 2013 collection is available through select retailers worldwide.

SPLASHH – SUN KISSED BLISS

Splashh have revealed that their debut album Comfort will be released on June 4th through US label Kanine Records, home of Surfer Blood and Fear of Men amongst others.

To celebrate this announcement the boys have put a new album track up on Soundcloud, one which will sit alongside previous singles All I Wanna Do, Headspins, Vacation and Lemonade on the LP – check out Sun Kissed Bliss below…

SAVAGES ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM DETAILS

Savages have revealed that their debut album is to be titled Silence Yourself and will be released on May 6th via Matador Records working in conjunction with their own Pop Noire imprint.

The album was recorded at the Fish Factory in London, with Johnny Hostile and Rodaidh McDonald manning the mixing desk, back in December. The girls have released a statement outlining their vision with regards to the release:

“SAVAGES is not trying to give you something you didn’t have already, it is calling within yourself something you buried ages ago, it is an attempt to reveal and reconnect your PHYSICAL and EMOTIONAL self and give you the urge to experience your life differently, your girlfriends, your husbands, your jobs, your erotic life and the place music occupies in your life. Because we must teach ourselves new ways of POSITIVE MANIPULATIONS, music and words are aiming to strike like lightning, like a punch in the face, a determination to understand the WILL and DESIRES of the self.

This album is to be played loud in the foreground.”

VIDEO: LENA DUNHAM DIRECTS FASHION FILM

Lena Dunham, lead actress and creator of awesome HBO show Girls, has now given us another reason to have a girl crush on her/hate how rad she is (depending on who you are) and has written & directed a new short fashion film for NYC designer Rachel Antonoff. Shot and acted in a Wes Anderson-esque style, the film is entitled Best Friends and features two girls (played by Lena’s sister Grace Dunham and Alice Gregory) who live in New York together. Of course, not forgetting, the film also serves the purpose of showcasing Rachel Antonoff’s Autumn/Winter 2013 collection, which includes lots of feminine dresses, autumnal tones, and comfy casual wear… Smart move Rach, getting LD involved, good work.
